Course Outline

   
Understand what personality disorders are, the possible causes, 'symptoms' and associated life difficulties in order to provide services and support that can make a positive difference to people's lives. Drawing upon personal experiences of receiving a personality disorder diagnosis, the course offers up to date evidence and relevant practical interventions to promote recovery and wellbeing.    

Aims

   

To develop understanding of the diagnostic category of ‘personality disorder’ in order to better provide services and support that can make a positive difference to people’s lives.

The workshop will draw upon personal experiences of receiving a personality disorder diagnosis and up to date evidence of helpful interventions and approaches.

   

Objectives

   
By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

  • Understand what is meant by the term ‘personality disorder’, the different types of ‘personality disorder’ and the proposed causal factors.
  • Consider the pros and cons of receiving a diagnosis of ‘personality disorder’ and the importance of challenging stigmatising attitudes.
  • Find out more about the diagnosis of ‘borderline personality disorder’ and ‘anti-social personality disorder’.
  • Consider some of the practical issues for staff and the current best practice guidance in providing services and support to individuals
