Addressing ACE's and complex trauma
Course overview:
Exploring the differences between Acute Stress Disorder, PTSD and Complex PTSD, the course develops understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) and explains the neurological, physiological and psychological impact of complex trauma.
Moving from initial interventions to help individuals process emotional responses without revisiting traumatic memories, you’ll learn a set of practical interventions to change key symptoms of trauma through grounding, reducing intrusive memories and flashbacks, overcoming avoidance and effective management of nightmares.
Aim(s):
To equip practitioners with the core skills necessary to deliver a solution focused and strengths-based intervention to manage the effects of trauma.
Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:
- Describe how the brain processes trauma memories
- Understand the difference between Acute Stress Disorder, PTSD and Complex PTSD
- Know how to support clients to safely process emotions related to trauma
- Explore a comprehensive six phase treatment intervention strategy
- Learn about implementation strategies to reduce the impact of working with trauma on the practitioner

Phil Harris
Phil Harris has worked in the drug misuse, mental health and homeless field for over 30 years as a practitioner, trainer and manager. He has managed a wide range of teams including family services, young people, dual diagnosis & personality disorders and substance misuse.
He is a visiting lecturer at a number of universities and was advisor to the US BICEP programme. He was also an advisor for the World Health Organisation in the Balkans region. He has designed treatment services across the UK for both addictions, young people and mental health, pioneering new approaches which have set new benchmarks for treatment outcomes.
He has written over 20 scholarly articles on effective practice and has published five books on substance misuse, treatment effectiveness, family and young people with complex needs.
