Personality disorder awareness
Course overview:
Understand what personality disorders are, the possible causes, 'symptoms' and associated life difficulties in order to provide services and support that can make a positive difference to people's lives.
Drawing upon personal experiences of receiving a personality disorder diagnosis, the course offers up to date evidence and relevant practical interventions to promote recovery and wellbeing.
Aim:
To develop understanding of the diagnostic category of ‘personality disorder’ in order to better provide services and support that can make a positive difference to people’s lives.
The workshop will draw upon individuals with personal experience of receiving a personality disorder diagnosis and up to date evidence of helpful interventions and approaches.
Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:
- Understand what is meant by the classification ‘personality disorder’, the different types of ‘personality disorder’ and the proposed causal factors
- Consider the pros and cons of receiving a diagnosis of ‘personality disorder’ and the importance of challenging stigmatising attitudes
- Find out more about the diagnosis of ‘borderline personality disorder’ and ‘emotionally unstable personality disorder’
- Consider some of the practical issues for staff and the current best practice guidance in providing services and support to individuals

Suzanne Pearson
Suzanne Pearson is a BABCP Accredited CBT therapist and a Registered Mental Health Nurse. She also has a PGCE in Adult Education. Suzanne has extensive and ongoing experience of supporting individuals to develop their resilience and well-being, and in supporting those recovering from mental and emotional distress.
She has worked in the NHS and voluntary sector as a therapist, mental health practitioner and service manager. Currently she provides a low cost in-person and online CBT therapy service for adults. Suzanne has been a longstanding volunteer with a peer led self-help group for people who self-harm, and she has also volunteered for a national out of hours crisis service.
She continues to be involved with various local mental health related charities as an advisor. She is an experienced independent mental health and social care trainer including being a qualified instructor for the Mental Health First Aid (Adult and Youth) and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) courses.
