Youth Mental Health First Aid
Course overview:
Aimed at anyone who supports young people 8-18, this course develops knowledge, awareness, and skills to spot the signs of a young person experiencing poor mental health, the confidence to start a conversation, and the tools to safeguard and signpost to appropriate support. Recently updated with the latest knowledge and research, it has been redeveloped through an inclusive lens with extensive input from young people with lived experience.
This course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider®.
Participants receive:
- a copy of the workbook to support their learning throughout the course
- a digital manual to refer to whenever they need it
- an invitation to join the Association of Mental Health First Aiders, which includes access to The MHFAider Support App® and the MHFA England Online Learning Hub
- a wallet-sized reference card with the Youth MHFA action plan (ALGEE)
- a digital Youth MHFAider certificate valid for three years
Aim(s):

Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:
- Explain what mental health is
- Describe how to look after their own mental health and wellbeing
- Describe the signs of poor mental health in young people
- Explain some of the risk factors associated with poor mental health in young people
- Demonstrate how to apply the Youth MHFA action plan (ALGEE®) in a Youth Mental Health First Aid conversation
- Describe the role of a Youth MHFAider®
- Know how to use the MHFAider Support App®
- Know how to access a dedicated text service provided by Shout and ongoing learning opportunities with MHFA England

Your trainer(s)
Suzanne Pearson
Suzanne Pearson is a BABCP Accredited CBT therapist and a Registered Mental Health Nurse. She also has a PGCE in Adult Education. Suzanne has extensive and ongoing experience of supporting individuals to develop their resilience and well-being, and in supporting those recovering from mental and emotional distress.
She has worked in the NHS and voluntary sector as a therapist, mental health practitioner and service manager. Currently she provides a low cost in-person and online CBT therapy service for adults. Suzanne has been a longstanding volunteer with a peer led self-help group for people who self-harm, and she has also volunteered for a national out of hours crisis service.
She continues to be involved with various local mental health related charities as an advisor. She is an experienced independent mental health and social care trainer including being a qualified instructor for the Mental Health First Aid (Adult and Youth) and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) courses.
