Emotional regulation: Polyvagal theory in practice
Course overview:
Drawing on Polyvagal Theory and the field of neuroscience, this course offers a clear framework for understanding how trauma impacts us at the level of the nervous system, which underpins our emotional landscape. Develop confidence in recognising the different nervous system states and how ‘co-regulation’ works, and practise tools for emotional regulation.
Aim(s):
To increase awareness of the impact of trauma on our nervous systems and emotions.
To develop some basic tools for emotional regulation.
Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:
- Gain a basic understanding of how the nervous system works, and ways in which it can be impacted by trauma
- Develop confidence in recognising the different nervous system states
- Try out some practical tools for emotional regulation
- Gain a basic understanding of how nervous systems interact with each other, and how ‘co-regulation’ works
- Explore how we can apply these understandings to our work and lives

Beth Friedeberg
Beth is a UKCP-accredited Core Process Psychotherapist, holds a private practice in Devon and online, and is a faculty member of the Karuna Institute, teaching on their post-graduate diploma in psychotherapy. Alongside this, she facilitates Reflective Practice, and works with organisations to help them embed this structure. She also offers trainings and consultancy work geared towards deepening understandings around how trauma and adversity affect us, and how we can work in ways that are sustainable, nourishing, and trauma-informed.
Beth has worked front-line in the charity sector for around a decade, supporting adults exiting prison, women affected by the street sex industry, people in recovery, and young people facing multiple disadvantage, in the capacity of support worker, life coach, trainer, and facilitator. She feels passionate about supporting in the 'cross-pollination' of the fields of front-line work and psychotherapy.
