Course overview:

Motivational interviewing is a leading approach to increase motivation and commitment to change.

This two day course maps the key factors that elicit change and demonstrates how motivational interviewing works alongside these forces. Drawing on both person centred and directive techniques, it offers practical skills to help clients articulate and recognise the need for change. It supports engagement with clients who have not yet achieved a sufficient level of commitment and moves them into action without confrontation.

Aim(s):

To build on current practice and provide participants with a deeper understanding of the skills and knowledge involved in motivational interviewing.

Objectives:

By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

  • Identify sub-types of pre-contemplative clients
  • Explore the drivers on motivation
  • Understand the influence of the relationship on motivation to change
  • Practise core skills in Motivational interviewing
  • Identify techniques to reduce resistance to change
  • Structure and deliver a Motivational interviewing brief intervention

What people say

"The knowledge provided by Phil with really effective exercises that helped us practice was really useful. The numerous examples Phil gave to bring it to life. Good amount of breaks, good use of writing on screen, engaged group, breakout room exercises all set at a good pace. Phil is brilliant. Plenty of food for thought but also nourishes the soul with his humanity."
