Understanding psychosis and responding to clients
Course overview:
Psychosis effects 1 in 100 people and can be a symptom of classified mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or bipolar disorder. Drawing on the views of people with lived experience of psychosis, we will explore the interventions and treatments available and consider how to respond and support individuals who are affected.
This session will also clarify the role of specialist mental health services and crisis services.
Aim(s):
To increase understanding about psychosis and how best to respond and support individuals.
Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:
- Increase understanding of what psychosis is and the factors that can make someone vulnerable to experiencing psychosis
- Gain information about mental illnesses that involve symptoms of psychosis i.e. schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder
- Find out about treatments and interventions and the services involved
- Consider how best to respond and support individuals who experience psychosis that are safe, person-centred and recovery orientated

Your trainer(s)
Suzanne Pearson
Suzanne Pearson is a BABCP Accredited CBT therapist and a Registered Mental Health Nurse. She also has a PGCE in Adult Education. Suzanne has extensive and ongoing experience of supporting individuals to develop their resilience and well-being, and in supporting those recovering from mental and emotional distress.
She has worked in the NHS and voluntary sector as a therapist, mental health practitioner and service manager. Currently she provides a low cost in-person and online CBT therapy service for adults. Suzanne has been a longstanding volunteer with a peer led self-help group for people who self-harm, and she has also volunteered for a national out of hours crisis service.
She continues to be involved with various local mental health related charities as an advisor. She is an experienced independent mental health and social care trainer including being a qualified instructor for the Mental Health First Aid (Adult and Youth) and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) courses.
