Course overview:

Consider some of the key issues in mental health and their implications in our work including: the different models for understanding the causes of mental health problems; the impact of stigma and discrimination and current approaches.

Explore the continuum of mental health experience, gain some practical insight into specific diagnoses, learn about practical interventions and the services available, and consider how we look after our own mental well-being while we are supporting others.

This course aims to raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues to enable workers to better understand and support individuals experiencing emotional distress and/or mental health problems.

 

Aim(s):

To increase awareness and understanding of mental health issues to enable workers to better understand and support individuals experiencing emotional distress and/or mental health problems.

 

Objectives:

By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

Consider some of the key issues in mental health and their implications in our work including: the different models for understanding the causes of mental health problems; the impact of stigma and discrimination and current approaches

Increase awareness of diversity issues and mental health in practice

Explore our understandings of mental well-being, mental ill health and mental ‘illness’ and the implications when assessing and supporting others

Gain some practical insight into the “hearing voices experience”

Gain information about specific medical diagnoses as required

Know more about the Recovery Approach, practical interventions/approaches and the services available

  • Think about how we look after our own mental well-being and how this relates to supporting others
  • Find out about the mental health services and the systems for arranging and managing care
  • Consider what we need to promote mental wellness

Maximum group size: 16

Your trainer(s)

Suzanne Pearson

Suzanne Pearson is a BABCP Accredited CBT therapist and a Registered Mental Health Nurse. She also has a PGCE in Adult Education. Suzanne has extensive and ongoing experience of supporting individuals to develop their resilience and well-being, and in supporting those recovering from mental and emotional distress.

 

She has worked in the NHS and voluntary sector as a therapist, mental health practitioner and service manager. Currently she provides a low cost in-person and online CBT therapy service for adults. Suzanne has been a longstanding volunteer with a peer led self-help group for people who self-harm, and she has also volunteered for a national out of hours crisis service.

 

She continues to be involved with various local mental health related charities as an advisor. She is an experienced independent mental health and social care trainer including being a qualified instructor for the Mental Health First Aid (Adult and Youth) and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) courses.
